Wales star Shane Williams has signed a new three-year contract with European Cup quarter-finalists the Ospreys.

Wales star Shane Williams has signed a new three-year contract with European Cup quarter-finalists the Ospreys.

Williams, who needs one try to equal Gareth Thomas’ record of 40 touchdowns for Wales, has committed himself to the region until 2011.

His decision follows that of Williams’ Wales and Ospreys colleague Lee Byrne, who agreed a new long-term deal earlier this week.

Wing Williams has scored 39 tries in 54 Tests for Wales and also toured New Zealand with the 2005 British and Irish Lions. His Ospreys record shows 35 tries from 78 games.

He said: “It is great that I’ve been able to re-sign with the Ospreys for the next three years.

“This is the only place I want to play rugby, so I am obviously delighted to tie everything up so quickly.

“I can’t imagine playing anywhere else. I’ve been involved in the region for 10 years now, firstly at Neath and then with the Ospreys, and it is where I feel at home.

“I want to stay here for the rest of my playing career.

“Although I think I’ve got more than just three years in me yet, when the day comes that I have to hang up my boots, I would like to hope that there will be some kind of opportunity for me to stay involved within the region in a coaching role.

“I think I have been in the best form of my career this season, and the new contract comes on the back of being awarded a testimonial earlier this year, so it has been a good time for me personally.”

Williams, 31, is currently preparing for Wales’ final two RBS 6 Nations games against Ireland and France. Victories in both matches would clinch the title and a Grand Slam.
