Sole welcomes coaching changes

Former Scotland captain David Sole has backed the appointments of Sean Lineen and Andy Robinson as assistant coaches on Scotland’s tour of Argentina.

Lineen will coach the backs and Robinson will take charge of the forwards for the summer Tests against last year’s World Cup semi-finalists.

The duo took over from Alan Tait and George Graham respectively and will team up with Frank Hadden for the trip to the southern hemisphere.

It has been suggested that the appointments will be to the detriment of Lineen’s Glasgow Warriors side and the Edinburgh team coached by Englishman Robinson.

However, Sole believes it is good news for a Scotland side which finished second bottom of the RBS 6 Nations table.

“Robinson has excellent credentials as a coach despite an unhappy time in sole charge of England,” he wrote in his Sunday Post column.

“He has also toured Argentina as a player and a coach and knows exactly what it takes to defeat the Pumas at home.

“Lineen has worked his way up the coaching ladder. He is unconventional and innovative in his thinking and has the ability to bring the best out of a fairly talented back division who have yet to click as a unit.”
