Cardiff Blues have appointed Justin Burnell as forwards coach for next season.

Blues director of rugby David Young told the club website: “Finally we’ve put all the pieces together. As always, negotiations take a bit of time, especially when those parties are in other jobs.

“I will remain as director of rugby. Justin Burnell will be our new forwards coach. Justin has come from the Blues academy, having been the director of the academy for five years and has done an excellent job there.

“Also on his C.V. he’s coached Wales Under-19’s to the Grand Slam and fourth in the Junior FIRA World Cup. He has also coached Pontypridd and Cardiff RFC. He’s obviously looking forward to his opportunity and I’m 100% confident he’ll do a great job.

“When Richard Webster left a season ago we had trouble finding the right person to fill the role of forwards coach. We asked Dan Baugh to step out of his conditioning role to help out for one season, which is what happened, and he did extremely well. He was a great help to us last season but he wants to follow a career in conditioning. He joins Trystan Bevan and Chris Tombs in our conditioning team.

“We’ve already announced Bill Millard as our backs coach and Gareth Baber our new skills coach. These appointments round off our coaching team nicely and puts us in line with other coaching teams across Europe.”
