Scotland ‘A’ coach Rob Moffat believes new signing Jim Thompson will push Test stars Chris Paterson, Nick de Luca and Hugo Southwell for a place in Edinburgh’s backline this season.

The former Heriot’s player joined Andy Robinson’s squad this summer and will provide competition for some of Scotland’s big names in the full-back and centre positions.

Moffat, who coaches Edinburgh’s backs on a day-to-day basis, has welcomed the addition of Thompson and Paterson, from Gloucester, to the ranks.

He said: “Jim is an outstanding young player and we are always on the look-out to bring in quality.

“He is an exciting addition to the squad. I think the whole squad is now very competitive. Lots of quality of players will be vying for the same positions.

“I think Jim will complement the young guys we signed last summer like Mark Robertson, John Houston and Andrew Turnbull.”
