Scotland star Simon Webster admits it is time for Edinburgh to start fulfilling their enormous potential.

The Scotland side which defeated Argentina in the second Test of the summer series was packed with Edinburgh players, with Test regulars Chris Paterson and Jim Hamilton also joining the squad for next season.

Now Webster wants Andy Robinson’s talented squad to make a mark on the Celtic League and European Cup this season.

The Hartlepool-born back said: “The fact that there were so many Edinburgh players within the back line was really satisfying for our fans, our team and showed the potential we’ve got.

“But at this stage it is still just potential and, unless we are winning regularly, then it doesn’t really count for much.

“We know we’ve got a good back line which is exciting and certainly Ben Cairns and Nick De Luca performed really well last year.

“Everyone has to play well just to get into the team and that is exactly how it should be; we just can’t wait for the season to start.”

Webster, who played as a wing and in the centre during this year’s RBS 6 Nations, is relishing the class of opposition he is set to face at the start of the new campaign.

He said: “We are counting the days until we face European Cup winners Munster in our first game in the Celtic League and we then face Celtic League champions Leinster in our first pool match at home in the European Cup.

“But before all of that we are up against the English champions, Wasps, at Murrayfield on August 23.”
