Ireland international Neil Best will not play in Northampton’s Guinness Premiership clash against Saracens as he prepares to face Rugby Football Union disciplinary chiefs.

Best was originally named in an unchanged Saints line-up around midday yesterday. But barely six hours later, the club announced he would not be involved at Vicarage Road after all.

Best was cited for alleged foul play during Northampton’s victory over Wasps last weekend.

The 29-year-old flanker must answer a charge that he made contact with the eye or eye area of Wasps and England back-row star James Haskell.

Saints released a statement that read: “Northampton Saints (the club) notes the impending tribunal hearing listed on Tuesday, September 30 2008.

“In light of the citation by the Rugby Football Union, the club and the player did not feel it appropriate for him to take part in the impending fixture versus Saracens this weekend.

“We look forward to the hearing on Tuesday, when hopefully all relevant matters surrounding the game versus London Wasps can be canvassed.”

Northampton have yet to announce who will replace Best in their starting line-up.

If the case is proven against him, then he could face a ban from the sport of between six weeks and two years.
