Scotland full-back Hugo Southwell admits he has gone through a difficult spell in his career over the past few months.

The return to Edinburgh from Gloucester of Chris Paterson has seen the utility back relegated to the bench for much of this season.

But with the former Scotland captain injured, Southwell has regained his place in Andy Robinson’s side for the past two games.

And against Glasgow he produced a man-of-the-match performance as Edinburgh secured a convincing 39-6 victory as his side climbed up into second spot in the Celtic League.

Southwell said: “I was absolutely delighted to play my part in the win. It has been a tough couple of months for me when I wasn’t getting selected.

“So to now get into the team and play to a standard I was proud of is really pleasing.

“Everyone in the squad is absolutely buzzing right now and we hope our supporters enjoyed the victory as much as we did.

“It would be great to see lots of Edinburgh fans at Firhill on Friday for the decider because we realise it will be a tough challenge.”
