Three former Scotland captain will help select the man charged with restoring the country’s fortunes in the 2010 RBS 6 Nations.

Scottish Rugby Union chairman Alan Munro and chief executive Gordon McKie will be assisted in the process by former Lions Andy Irvine, Andy Nicol and Gordon Bulloch.

Scotland are looking for a new coach after Frank Hadden stepped down following another disappointing RBS 6 Nations campaign.

Scotland won just one match against lowly Italy and failed to meet the 40 per cent win ratio the SRU had agreed with the former Edinburgh coach.

McKie admits it is vital to get the right man in the role and was eager to ensure a strong rugby bias on to the selection committee.

He said: “We don’t want the ‘suits’ to make the appointment. We want the people who know rugby to assist us.

“It’s a critically important appointment. We’ve got to get this right. The process will be very thorough.”
