The Scottish Rugby Union have narrowed their short-list to be the new Scotland coach down to six men.

The SRU are searching for a new coach after Frank Hadden stepped down following a disappointing RBS 6 Nations in which they won just one match, against hapless Italy.

It was the second RBS 6 Nations in succession that they had won only one game.

Former England coach Andy Robinson is almost certainly one of the men in the running having impressed while at Edinburgh.

Mike Brewer, the former All Black captain who joined the Scotland set-up as forwards coach in November, is also likely to be in the frame after admitting he would apply before this month’s deadline.

There were originally 30 applicants, with speculation suggesting World Cup winners Rod Macqueen and Jake White were among the hopefuls.

Former Scotland captains Andy Nicol, Andy Irvine and Gordon Bulloch will help the SRU make their choice.

SRU chief executive Gordon McKie said: “We’re very pleased with the number of applications we’ve had, but we’ll do this thoroughly. The most important thing is that we don’t rush it.

“After the first interview, we’ll have a second interview and maybe even a third – but the most important thing is that we get the right guy.”
