Scarlets centre Regan King is struggling to be fit for the start of the new season after a hamstring operation.

The New Zealander, 28, was injured in a 31-17 defeat by Leinster in February, and the Scarlets’ season begins at home to the same opponents on 4 September.

It was initially thought that he would be fit before the end of last season.

“We are really pleased with Regan’s progress since the op, he is doing well and is on course in terms of rehab,” said Scarlets physio Patrick Moran.

“He has already been undertaking light training and some upper body strength and we should see him running again by the end of August.

“We will be working closely with him, and are hopeful that he will be back and available for selection in the autumn.”

The Scarlets will hope to have King firing on all cylinders for their first Heineken Cup game, at home to Brive on 10 October.
