Evans: Tries will come

Thom Evans insists Scotland have made progress with the ball in hand under Andy Robinson, despite scoring just two tries in their three autumn internationals.

Although he masterminded wins in two of his first three games in charge, Robinson is still faced with similar problems to his recent predecessors, all of whom struggled to improve the side as an attacking force.

Scotland touched down twice in their opening November Test against Fiji but only created a handful of opportunities to add to that tally in the games against Australia and Argentina.

But Glasgow wing Evans is confident the work being done by backs coach Gregor Townsend will pay off in time for the RBS 6 Nations.

“Gregor’s worked really hard with the backs,” Evans said.

“We’ve been practising really well and putting some really good moves together.

“But, unfortunately, we couldn’t really show that.”

Evans believes Scotland need only to fine-tune Saturday’s first-half performance against Argentina to be successful.

He said: “It’s something to build on and if we can keep playing rugby like we did in the first half then we’ll be up there with any team.

“It’s just putting that together for two halves.”

Evans, who was recalled for the 9-6 defeat after missing the opening two games, reckons accuracy of ball and competitiveness at the breakdown are the two areas which require work in the coming months.

“The chances I did get, the pass always seemed to be slightly behind so it was tough to really run onto it at full pace,” the 24-year-old said.

“We worked really hard all week at the breakdown and I felt, especially in the first half, that we had the better of them.

“But we just got a bit isolated in the second half, guys not getting to breakdowns.

“If you do that against a team like Argentina, they’re going to turn you over.

“It’s something we’re going to have to look at and put right next time.”
