Leinster have named Josef Schmidt as the man to replace out-going coach Michael Cheika at the end of the season.

The 44-year-old will take charge of the Heineken Cup winners once Australian Cheika departs the RDS Arena at the end of the current campaign.

Schmidt – who has signed a three-year-deal – is currently the assistant coach at French side Clermont Auvergne.

“It’s an enormous opportunity for me,” said Schmidt. “It’s a new challenge. I hope I can bring something to the team.”

Cheika – who has been in the hot seat since 2005 and led them to European glory in the summer – had announced he was not renewing his contract with the Magners League club.
