Sale fly-half Charlie Hodgson’s chances of earning a place in Martin Johnson’s next EPS squad have been boosted after the England boss praised his performances on the tour to Australia and New Zealand.

The 29-year-old had been out in the cold for two years after a disastrous tour to New Zealand in 2008, where his defensive frailties came to the fore.

But after being one of the standout performers in the defeat against New Zealand Maori, Johnson is glad to have him back in the fold.

“Charlie has been impressive. He has shown a lot of maturity and stood up to the physicality of the game in the Southern Hemisphere.

“He played for us three times and we gave him those starts because he has been controlling the game for us. Charlie has done lots of good stuff.”
