England World Cup winner Jason Robinson has shocked the rugby world by announcing he will come out of retirement to play for National Two North team Fylde next season.

Robinson retired after the 2007 World Cup where he reached the final for a second tournament running and spent last season as head coach of Sale Sharks.

The Rugby League convert is regarded as one of both code’s greatest ever players and toured twice for the British & Irish Lions.

Fylde have already pulled off one masterstroke in persuading former England boss Brian Ashton to the Woodlands.

And Ashton was delighted to hear that Robinson, who he persuaded to come out of international retirement before the 2007 RBS 6 Nations, would be back in the game.

He said: “It is a remarkably fortunate coincidence for me to be returning to help out my old club Fylde as Jason arrives to play.

“I have had the privilege of working with Jason and know that his stature, ability and qualities as a player and a person will benefit all who come into contact with him, both on and off the field.”
