Gavin Henson is adamant his return to rugby with Saracens will earn him a call up for the RBS 6 Nations – despite admitting to having had no contact with Wales coach Warren Gatland.

Henson hasn’t played rugby for 18 months but has signalled his intent to end that by signing for Saracens after being released by Welsh outfit Ospreys.

He has featured 31 times for his country with his last appearance coming against Ireland during the 2009 Six Nations as Declan Kidney’s side went on to win the Grand Slam.

Saracens head coach Brendan Venter conceded it may not be until December that Henson makes his competitive return but the 28-year-old centre is confident a Six Nations call up can follow.

“The Six Nations are coming up and I would love to be part of that,” said Henson. “I don’t know if that will come too soon but I don’t think it will.

“I am a positive person and I think I can pick up my rugby skills again quite quickly. Hopefully I can perform and get into that Six Nations squad.

“I will just concentrate on my rugby and on training. I have a huge desire to play again, the hunger is back, and I still have a huge ambition to play for my country.”
