Warren Gatland was handed a double fitness boost by the news Shane Williams is likely to figure against Fiji while flanker Dan Lydiate and James Hook are also closing in on a return.
Williams, Wales’ all-time record leading tryscorer, missed the 81-7 defeat of Namibia with a thigh strain but WRU medical performance manager Prav Mathema delivered positive news on his progress.
He said: “Shane is recovering well,” said Mathema.
“He is back up and running and we are pleased with his progress, but the next 48 hours will be essential in determining whether he may be available to us this weekend.”
Wales need to beat Fiji to guarantee their quarter-final place which is likely to be against RBS 6 Nations rivals Ireland.
It is that match which Mathema believes blindside Lydiate and Hook – who has played at full-back against South Africa and Samoa – will return to action.
Hook also injured his shoulder and Lydiate hurt his ankle in 17-10 victory over Samoa and Mathema is confident they will play a further part in the tournament.
“Dan is now back running again after suffering an ankle ligament strain in the Samoa game,” added Mathema.
“He has been incredibly diligent with his rehab and his self management and as a consequence has given himself every opportunity to be available for selection within the next two weeks.
“He still has a number of stages to complete within his rehabilitation but we are confident that he will continue to make a swift recovery.”
“James has also been extremely thorough with his rehabilitation and is recovering well from the A/C joint injury to his shoulder.
“We are hoping to integrate him into full training towards the start of next week.”
