England Under-18s head coach John Fletcher claims some of his young troops will have to pinch themselves after defending their Justin Bridou Trophy at the FIRA-AER European Championships against France.

Flanker Matt Bolwell, centre Nick Tompkins and prop Paul Hill all scored for the defending champions who went into a 21-3 lead before eventually prevailing 27-22.

It was the Red Rose’s third final in three years, but after prevailing once more Fletcher insists it’s time to take stock of their achievements.

“Some of the players will have to pinch themselves,” said Fletcher. “They’re only 17 or 18 years of age and it was high quality rugby, by both teams.

“There was attacking intent, both sides moved the ball around, there were exciting moments in the game and glad we came out on top.

“It was a really good performance first and foremost, France are a really good side.

“I thought it was evenly matched but I thought we were ever so slightly the better side.

“It’s the third final we’ve been in, we’ve been fortunate enough to win two so we’re pleased.

“This group of players has worked incredibly hard, we started this programme back in August and I’m absolutely delighted for the players.”
