Joe Schmidt has spoken of his pride after it was confirmed he will replace Declan Kidney as Ireland’s head coach.

Kidney’s five-year spell in charge of the national side was ended after they finished fifth during this year’s RBS 6 Nations.

New Zealander Schmidt takes over the role after three years with Irish province Leinster, who he led to back-to-back European Cup titles in 2011 and 2012.

And after being unveiled as Ireland’s new boss through until the end of the 2016 RBS 6 Nations the former Clermont backs coach admitted he was relishing the opportunity.

“It’s an honour to be selected as the Ireland Team Coach,” he said.

“I’m very conscious of the responsibilities that go with the position and look forward to working alongside the players in an effort to meet those responsibilities through the quality of our performance.

“I certainly appreciate the prompt and professional handling of the selection process by the IRFU, especially with regard to my current coaching commitment in Leinster, which I will continue to prioritise over the coming weeks.

“It is a step into the unknown, but it is highly motivating for me and hopefully that will be borne out.”

Schmidt will begin his role on July 1, ensuring Les Kiss will remain in interim charge for the summer’s tour to the USA and Canada.
