England hooker Tom Youngs believes the British & Irish Lions must improve their attacking instincts if they’re to wrap up a first series win in 16 years this weekend.
Youngs, who started four of England’s five RBS 6 Nations matches this year, played an integral role in the Lions’ nail-biting 23-21 victory over Australia in Brisbane.
The Lions rode their luck however and Australia missed 14 points from the tee, including two late penalties by Kurtley Beale – the second of which was the last kick of the game.
Australia have their injury problems – four of their backs were taken off during the first Test – but the Lions also have their own issues after it was confirmed Paul O’Connell will miss the rest of the tour with a broken arm.
And Youngs admits there is plenty of room for improvement as the Lions look to put the series to bed in Melbourne.
“We left some opportunities out there and that’s something we need to address. We didn’t play all that well but we dug out a win,” said Youngs.
“We didn’t attack as well as we would have liked but that’s a great thing to know. We didn’t play to our full potential on Saturday night but we still managed to win the game.
“We all understand and realise there’s still much more to come from this side. That gives us such a boost heading into the second Test.
“Believe me, we have learned so much from Saturday night. It was an incredible experience but we all know we can take our game to another level.
“It was a remarkable night but my heart was in my mouth at the end. I think we all felt the same way. But at the end of the day we won the game and that’s all the matters.
“Australia are a very good side and they showed what they can do. Regardless of who is injured Saturday is going to be another tough match. We just need to ensure we play much better.”
