Scotland head coach Scott Johnson is being presented with an ever-increasing selection headache – something he is relishing ahead of next year’s RBS 6 Nations.
Glasgow Warriors’ strong start to the RaboDirect PRO12 in particular has given Johnson cause for optimism as the autumn internationals approach.
Glasgow have won each of their first three games this season and the likes of Mark Bennett, Alex Dunbar and Jonny Gray have caught the Scotland boss’ eye.
Johnson is looking to build on a very encouraging RBS 6 Nations campaign last year and clashes with Japan, South Africa and Australia in November will give him an opportunity to test out some of the upstarts.
“It’s definitely more competitive for spots – the summer tour was great for that,” he told www.scottishrugby.org
“A couple of younger players have stood up at regional level as well, which is adding good pressure to positions that we are not notoriously strong in.
“I think Mark Bennett’s form has been superb. It’s really nice to see Dunbar playing good club footy again and that’s fantastic and with Jonny Gray coming through that’s a bit of pressure on everyone as well.”
Johnson is expecting a series of stern tests for his side in November and refuses to underestimate their first opponents – Japan.
Though they have managed to avoid a visit from the rampant All Blacks, he has warned the players that they will have to perform to a very high level to come away with anything.
“People who think that Japan are what they used to be are kidding themselves,” he added. “They’re a quality side who we’re playing first up.
“South Africa’s form has been superb since our scare that we gave them over in Nelspruit during the summer.
“The way they are playing, the combination of brute force and a bit more flair, says they are dangerous.
“Australia have got some potency and if they actually get it right they can put any side to bed.
“If they get their part right they are the most dangerous side in the world for points.”
