Gloucester director of rugby Nigel Davies believes Jonny May’s improving consistency sets him out as an ideal candidate to fill England’s wing position in the RBS 6 Nations.

The 23-year-old marked his England debut with a try during the summer tour of Argentina before being chosen in the Saxons squad at the beginning of the season.

But with England short of wingers for the RBS 6 Nations – Ben Foden, Christian Wade and Marland Yarde are all currently sidelined with injuries – Davies backed his player to make the step up.

Last weekend May crossed for his 11th try from his last 15 Aviva Premiership encounters and Davies, who spent a spell as Wales caretaker head coach in 2007, believes the winger is improving all the time.

“Having coached international rugby I wouldn’t be afraid of selecting him. He’s had his ups and downs but he’s becoming a consistent rugby player.

“The key thing about international rugby players is as much as they have X factor they don’t make many mistakes.

“They are very accurate at what they do. That’s what Jonny is working very hard at and is getting better at every match.

“He’s very professional in the way he approaches the game. He trains hard, conducts himself very well and his game understanding is growing by the day.”
