The Ulsterman has not played in the RBS 6 Nations since the 2012 defeat to England at Twickenham and while he was involved in the summer tour to North America, he was a spectator for the autumn campaign.

But Trimble’s club form, coupled with injuries to Ulster teammate Tommy Bowe, Simon Zebo and Luke Fitzgerald see the 29-year-old come back into the fold under Joe Schmidt.

And Trimble is determined to make the most of his reprieve against a Scotland side that he believes will adopt tactics that suit him.

“Scotland are fairly physical and they’ve picked a backline that’s going to try and make the most of that and hopefully that will suit me,” said Trimble.

“It’s certainly good to be back, it’s been a while for a major game and a couple of years in the RBS 6 Nations so I’ve been biding my time.

“Fortunately I’m back in there and I’m looking forward to making the most of it.

“It’s a big opportunity for me and I’ve been waiting for a while so I can’t wait to get out there and hopefully go from strength to strength.

“I think whenever you miss out on one or two selections it can snowball and then you go out of form but you have just got to try and get your consistency back and go back to basics and when there are one or two injuries you get an opportunity and it’s up to me to take it.”
