The 28-year-old has been struggling with a thumb problem and his hand has been in a splint following Ireland’s 13-10 defeat to England at Twickenham last weekend.

“Johnny Sexton returned from Twickenham with a thumb ligament injury, and will be unavailable between 10 days and six weeks,” said Racing Metro coach Laurent Labit.

Earlier, Joe Schmidt had spoken of how he had hoped to have Sexton available for Ireland’s remaining two matches but admitted he would know more in the coming days.

Sexton has started all three of Ireland’s RBS 6 Nations matches this year but in the victories over Wales and Scotland he was replaced in the latter stages by Paddy Jackson, who would be in line to step in against Italy.
