Edwards saw his side trail just 3-0 at half-time but after the break, France motored through the gears and ended up 27-0 winners, chalking up a third straight victory and maintaining their hopes of a Grand Slam.

Wales meanwhile, have lost their opening three matches and things don’t get much easier for Edwards’ side with a trip to face England – champions seven years in a row from 2006 to 2012 – next up.

And Edwards admits that his side must improve on their second-half performance against France.

“We knew the opening five minutes would be key. Even at 10-0 down we were the dominant team –the message was quite simple, get out of our half and keep pressure on them but they got an opportunity and scored another try,” he said.

“The last five minutes isn’t acceptable at this level. A good team punishes you. We pride ourselves on our defence, at times we are probably better without the ball, but the last six or seven minutes isn’t acceptable.

“Certain players let themselves down in terms of what they did – it’s important we understand that a collective effort is important in defence.”
