Ireland winger Simon Zebo insists he and his Munster teammates have to learn their lessons or face yet more heartbreak after they tumbled out in the European semi-finals this weekend.

For the second year in a row, Zebo and co lost out in the final four, this time to defending champions Toulon.

The winger, who was left out of Ireland’s victorious RBS 6 Nations campaign earlier this year, was one of the star performers on the day for Rob Penney’s troops.

The 24-year-old crossed for the game’s only try in the second half but 21 points from the boot of Jonny Wilkinson proved decisive as the defending European champions held on for victory.

Last year in Montpellier Munster came close to upsetting Clermont but ultimately fell short, and the same happened again this year, much to Zebo’s disappointment.

“We’ve been here before,” he said. “We had chances last year to win and we didn’t take them and it’s the same this year.

“We can’t keep doing this to ourselves every year. We want to be competing for silverware and semi-finals aren’t good enough for Munster Rugby.

“We need to have a long, hard look at ourselves and make sure we’re in with a fighting chance come next year.”
