Jonathan Davies says Wales have to rise to the challenge posed by South Africa next month.

Davies will line up for the Probables against the Possibles in the trial match at the Liberty Stadium on Friday evening with head coach Warren Gatland naming his squad straight after the match.

And centre Davies, part of Wales’ 2013 RBS 6 Nations-winning squad, insists whoever is chosen will need to be on top of their game for the two-Test series.

“South Africa showed in the autumn their physicality and ruthlessness,” Davies told Wales Online.

“So we can’t rest on our laurels and expect things to happen. The squad that goes out there needs to make sure we don’t take a step back.

“We have to meet the challenge that has been thrown down. Jean De Villiers is missing for them. He’s their captain and talisman and has a lot of experience so that’s going to be a big blow.

“We both have injuries and it’s the modern game. It’s going to be tough for the squad that goes out there.”
