Wales head coach Warren Gatland insists Samson Lee deserves his chance after handing the prop his full debut against South Africa on Saturday.

Gatland has made just two changes to the side defeated 38-16 in last weekend’s series opener against the Springboks, with Lee replacing Adam Jones and Josh Turnbull starting ahead of Aaron Shingler at openside.

Lee replaced veteran Jones in the first half last time out but Jones does not even make the bench in Nelspruit. Lee made his international debut last November against Argentina and will join Gethin Jenkins and Ken Owens in a new look front-row.

And Gatland, who saw his side relinquish their RBS 6 Nations crown this year, says he has no qualms about throwing him in at the deep end.

“We were pleased with the way Samson went when he came on and the impact he made,” Gatland told Wales Online.

“We have also given Aaron Jarvis a chance on the bench.  He did well in the trial match and Eastern Province game.

“Adam has not had a lot of rugby recently. The way the game is and the weather conditions for this week we just felt we wanted to have a look at someone else and make a change.

“He was disappointed with us taking him off and we appreciate that because of what he has achieved as a player.”
