Heading into the final weekend of the Five Nations, Scotland and England met in Edinburgh both well in the hunt for a Grand Slam.

Jeremy Guscott grabbed his third try of the competition but it was a score for Stanger after the break – and the reliable boot of Craig Chalmers – that clinched it for the home side.

Holding a five-point lead after half time, Scotland flanker John Jeffrey picked up from the back of a scrum and fed scrum-half Gary Armstrong.

He sold a half-dummy and released in the contact, with Gavin Hastings reeling in the pass with an excellent one-handed catch.

The full-back sprinted down the touchline and, moments before being pushed into touch, hoisted a right-footed kick towards the English line.

Two Scots, surrounded by three white shirts, gave chase and Stanger was first to it, diving onto the ball to score and wrap up a memorable victory.
