Scotland head coach Vern Cotter insists there are plenty of positives to take away from their summer tour despite finishing it with a heavy 55-6 defeat to South Africa in Port Elizabeth.
Cotter had got his reign off to a winning start in recent weeks with victories over USA, Canada and Argentina.
However that run came to a sudden end on Saturday as 2007 world champions South Africa ran in eight tries for their second heaviest win ever over Scotland.
But Cotter, who handed an international debut to Glasgow Warriors number eight Adam Ashe, preferred to look at the overall picture for his Scotland team, who finished fifth in this year’s RBS 6 Nations with just one win.
“I think it’s positive. [Adam] Ashe had his first game. Kevin Bryce came on at hooker, I thought he played well,” he said.
“The guys didn’t give in; it’s just a case of taking away the stuff that doesn’t work and repeating the stuff that does work.
“We didn’t start the game particularly well, [it was] how not to start a game really. We gave away penalties and field positions and they scored points from them, so that was disappointing.
“We probably weren’t quite as dominant in the tackle as we normally are – we came across a powerful side.
“I’m looking at the positive things really – I just think we need to change a couple of things.
“It’s been a positive tour, for players and staff it’s been good. We need to start believing a lot more in what we can do.”
