Brian O’Driscoll believes Simon Easterby is a perfect fit for the Ireland forwards coach job as plans are put into place for the nation’s defence of their RBS 6 Nations crown next year.

O’Driscoll, now retired, brought the curtain down on an exceptional international career after Ireland edged France to clinch the 2014 RBS 6 Nations.

And the post-O’Driscoll era has started in earnest, with two hard-fought Test wins in Argentina and Easterby’s appointment in Joe Schmidt’s backroom staff.

Easterby stepped down as Scarlets head coach earlier this month to replace John Plumtree in Ireland’s set-up and O’Driscoll insists the former flanker’s philosophy will strike a chord with the players.

“I think it’s a great signing. I think it’s a very smart move from Joe,” O’Driscoll told the Irish Independent. “Simon was always a very smart player. He knew shortcuts in the game, he was someone who had a huge engine and demanded a lot of those around him.

“I think he’ll just bring his type of game into what he expects from his forward pack. He’s a big man for detail, that fits well with Joe Schmidt, Paul O’Connell and a lot of the forward pack.”
