Italy full-back Luke McLean believes his move to Sale Sharks will turn him into a better player for the Azzurri.

The 27-year-old has moved to the AJ Bell Stadium after five years at Benetton Treviso.

McLean started all five of Italy’s 2014 RBS 6 Nations games and he believes testing himself in the Premiership will be to the benefit of the Azzurri as well.

“It was a bit of everything in deciding to join Sale – a new challenge, a new experience and a new lifestyle,” McLean told the Manchester Evening News.

“Everyone talks about the Premiership being the toughest competition in the northern hemisphere and it’s the real benchmark so you want to prove to yourself that you are capable of playing at this level.

“No player is ever content with their performances – you want to work to get better and that’s something that I saw at the club. They are on the up and I definitely felt like I could contribute.

“Ultimately, I hope coming here will make me a better player. One of the main reasons in coming over was to try to get better as a player.

“Individually, if you get better then collectively you will improve too – that will be to everyone’s benefit.”
