Head coach Vern Cotter wants Scotland to be professional in every single aspect of their upcoming autumn internationals after naming a 33-man squad to be captained by lock Grant Gilchrist.

Gilchrist skippered Scotland twice during the summer against Argentina and South Africa and has been handed the honour again by Cotter with the Pumas their first opponents of the autumn.

New Zealand and Tonga follow with skipper Gilchrist one of six players chosen from his club Edinburgh while 17 have been chosen from Glasgow Warriors and ten from outside Scotland.

Glasgow outside-centre Mark Bennett is the sole uncapped player selected while three have been invited to train with the 33-man squad – Zander Fagerson, Hamish Watson and Allan Dell.

And Cotter said: “It’s essential that we show maturity, mental strength and adaptability throughout the series. We have a good group, but one of the most important things is that we play for each other, we play for the shirt, and we enjoy what we do.

“Another important thing for us, other than showing improvements in key areas, is developing an attack that will give us opportunities to score tries or earn points through teams being forced to infringe.

“We want to develop, and impose, our style, will, and strategy on our opposition. We want to play well, and enjoy playing in front of our home crowd.”
