Scotland head coach Vern Cotter has confirmed captain Grant Gilchrist will join up with his squad, but play no part on the field in next month’s autumn internationals due to injury.

The 24-year-old lock suffered hairline fractures in his forearm while on duty for Edinburgh in their European Challenge Cup victory over Lyon at Murrayfield this weekend.

And Cotter has confirmed Gilchrist, who won one of his eight Scotland caps at last year’s RBS 6 Nations, will miss the visits of Argentina, New Zealand and Tonga to Murrayfield.

He said: “Clearly this is really disappointing news for Grant, who’s been a fine player and leader for his club this season and was set to continue that role for Scotland this autumn.

“Despite being unable to play, he will still join and be part of the squad in camp on Sunday, and feature heavily in our preparations for the autumn Tests.”

Jim Hamilton of Saracens is set to replace Gilchrist in the 33-man party.
