Jonathan Davies’ participation in Wales’ autumn campaign has been thrown into doubt with backs coach Rob Howley revealing he is set for scans on a shoulder injury.

Davies met up with the Wales squad ahead of the autumn internationals less than a day after suffering a shoulder injury in Clermont Auvergne’s defeat of Sale.

The 26-year-old centre was recalled after a four-month absence from Test rugby for Wales’ RBS 6 Nations clash with England back in March after tearing a pectoral muscle.

Davies did that during the 2013 autumn series against South Africa but started the following and final RBS 6 Nations outing with Scotland and the two Tests this summer with the Springboks.

But backs coach Howley revealed Davies’ injury will be looked at before any news is given on his participation in this year’s autumn internationals or otherwise.

“Jonathan had a bump on his shoulder and we are uncertain as to the extent of the injury,” Howley told WalesOnline. “A scan has been organised for him.

“I watched the game. He created a fantastic try after he had done something to his shoulder. He has obviously felt some pain and come off immediately. We just have to wait to ascertain how bad that injury is.

“Our medical manager Prav (Mathema) spoke to him yesterday after the game and I sent him a text to see how he was and the extent of the injury.

“It is disappointing, but centre is a pretty attritional position now. It’s the nature of the game. It’s no different to other campaigns. We just have to get on and work with what we’ve got.”
