Ross Ford believes an improving Scotland can be contenders for the 2015 RBS 6 Nations after Vern Cotter’s side took a big step forward in this month’s autumn internationals.

Scotland kicked off November with a performance full of flair to beat Argentina 41-31 while last weekend’s victory over Tonga was a comfortable one.

Yet the game that got people talking was the display against New Zealand, as the All Blacks were pushed to the brink before a late Jeremy Thrush try saw the world champions escape from Murrayfield by 24-16.

It all bodes well for Scotland’s next RBS 6 Nations challenge as they look to leave this year’s disappointing effort – a sole victory over Italy – in the dust.

And hooker Ford insists taking the crown outright is by no means impossible after such encouraging signs this autumn.

Ford said: “We could win the Six Nations – there is no reason why we can’t.

“Everyone in the squad is improving, we just need to keep pushing each other on.

“Things didn’t click for us in the last tournament but I don’t think it was a lack of confidence.

“It was a momentum thing. You need it to be successful in sport and we just couldn’t get going.

“But that’s all in the past, the last three games have been good and we need to continue that.”   Visit our official RBS 6 Nations Instagram page to follow all the best images from the Championship
