The Emerald Isle lifted the 2014 Championship with four wins from five games, just edging out England thanks to a final weekend win in France.

But, with the cherry of a World Cup less than 12 months away the driving force behind some major improvements amongst the northern hemisphere contigent, O’Connell believes Ireland will need to up their game if they are to successfully defend their crown.

“We made big progress in 2014. We put great foundations in place,” the 35-year-old told Sky Sports.

“But there isn’t one Six Nations team going backwards for the next Six Nations, they are all going to be better.

“So if teams get better and we don’t you can only go backwards, so hopefully we’ll kick on from here.” Ireland kick off their 2015 RBS 6 Nations campaign against Italy at the Stadio Olimpico.
