Dominguez, who also won two caps for Argentina, turned out 74 times for Italy, including playing in four consecutive RBS 6 Nations tournaments from 2000-2003.

The former Stade Francais man scored 162 points during that time before eventually hanging up his boots in 2004.

The 48-year-old, who has no experience of coaching at the top level, will join European and French champions Toulon in January 2016 in order to increase his knowledge before replacing Bernard Laporte who will step down.

And club president Mourad Boudjellal was quick to predict continued success under Dominguez.

“I can say that Diego Dominguez will be Bernard Laporte’s successor,” Boudjellal told French TV channel Canal Plus.

“He will arrive on January 2, 2016 and will work for six months with the staff to get to know the team and the club to make it a smooth transition.

“He will not only be a great coach he will be the greatest ever. He has a hunger to succeed that I have rarely come across.”
