Scotland have been dealt a blow in the build-up to the 2016 RBS 6 Nations as Henry Pyrgos is likely to miss most of the Championship after the scrum-half went under the knife.

The 26-year-old Glasgow Warriors No.9 has had surgery on a wrist injury that will put him out for at least four months, placing even more responsibility on the shoulders of skipper Greig Laidlaw with Sam Hidalgo-Clyne now set to step in as his deputy.

Pyrgos made three appearances as a replacement in the 2015 RBS 6 Nations, coming on in the defeats to England, Italy and France.

His Glasgow teammate Fraser Brown is also set to be out for up to eight weeks with a foot problem, after a promising World Cup for Scotland in which they came within a whisker of reaching the semi-finals.

“Scrum-half Henry Pyrgos exacerbated a wrist injury while away with Scotland,” said a statement from the Warriors.

“He has undergone surgery at Spire Leeds Hospital whilst under the care of the Scotland medical team, and is expected to be out of action for around four months.”

“Hooker Fraser Brown has had an operation on a foot injury exacerbated while away with Scotland at the Rugby World Cup, and is expected to remain on the sidelines for up to eight weeks.

“Other players are currently undergoing investigation at BMI Ross Hall Hospital and updates will be provided in due course.”

But it was not all bad news for Vern Cotter’s side though, with Laidlaw named as one of six nominees for the World Rugby player of the year on Friday, just days after centre Mark Bennett was also shortlisted as World Rugby breakthrough player of the year.
