Eddie Jones’ appointment as England’s new head coach has led some to write off Chris Robshaw’s hopes of retaining the Red Rose captaincy.

But – with the 2016 RBS 6 Nations around the corner – you rule out the Harlequins flanker at your own peril according to his club head coach Conor O’Shea.

Quins slipped to defeat in atrocious conditions against Exeter Chiefs on Saturday but did come away with two bonus points from a dramatic clash at Sandy Park.

And while the loss was tough to take for O’Shea – the Irishman took plenty of positives from Robshaw’s performance in the No.6 shirt against the Chiefs.

Jones has already said he plans to meet Robshaw face to face to discuss his intentions and O’Shea insists it would be foolish to ignore the flanker – who has been a virtual ever present for England since taking over the captaincy in 2012.

“Chris Robshaw was outstanding,” he said.

“I hope people take a long, hard look before they start writing him off. He has been one of the outstanding back-row forwards in this country for many a year.

“I don’t normally single out players but he made yards when you didn’t think he could make yards.

“He was turning the ball over, he was tackling, he was working. I am gutted for us as a team, but I am incredibly proud of the performance.”
