Bath head coach Mike Ford has confirmed that Rhys Priestland will make himself available for selection to Warren Gatland’s RBS 6 Nations side after making a u-turn on his decision to take a break from international rugby.

The 28-year-old fly-half is a newcomer at the Rec after joining from Scarlets at the end of the 2014/15 season. He has earned 40 caps for his country during the course of his career and made his RBS 6 Nations bow in 2011.

A year later he helped Wales to RBS Six Nations glory and this year was part of Gatland’s side at the World Cup before he made the choice to take an 18-month sabbatical from the international game.

But he has now decided to reverse that decision – though Ford still sees the Welshman as crucial to his plans in Bath.

“After reflecting on his decision he has decided that, if selected, he will make himself available,” said Ford.

“He has only made two starts for us, but he was good for us last Saturday when we beat Worcester Warriors. He will start again this weekend in the game at Newcastle Falcons.

“He has been fantastic in training and it is obvious to everyone that he is a highly experienced and intelligent footballer.

“Whether or not he plays for Wales in the Six Nations we hope to keep him at Bath for the full length of his contract and possibly beyond.”
