Having spent his playing career plying his trade in New Zealand and then latterly coached predominately in the northern hemisphere, Warren Gatland is certainly well placed to comment on the standard of rugby around the world.

And on the eve of this year’s RBS 6 Nations, the current Wales head coach is adamant nothing comes close in terms of atmosphere and tradition than the famous competition.

Since taking charge of Wales back in 2007, Gatland has led the country to three RBS 6 Nations championships including Grand Slams in 2008 and 2012.

An attempt at making it three begins a week on Sunday when Wales travel to the Aviva Stadium to take on Ireland and Gatland was rubbing his hands together at the prospect of getting  started again.

“There is no doubt there is some absolute quality in the Rugby Championship,” the New Zealander said.

“We have seen that and we can’t argue with that in terms of the World Cup.

“But as a competition, nothing rivals the Six Nations. It’s not just a rugby game, it’s an event, it’s bragging rights for 12 months.

“What’s brilliant about it, and what the southern hemisphere can’t replicate, is the amount of away fans.

“That’s what creates the atmosphere in stadiums. That’s special, it’s absolutely brilliant. There’s the history of the tournament as well.”
