France lock Yoann Maestri isn’t fretting over taking on a new role with les Bleus ahead of the RBS 6 Nations.

The 28-year-old was one of the most used players under Philippe Saint-André, and is the second most capped player in the France squad selected by Guy Novès.

With the retirements of a number of key players, including Maestri’s Toulouse teammate and former captain Thierry Dusautoir, it’s a new-look French squad.

But with Guilhem Guirado named skipper, Maestri believes the team just needs to focus on a common goal, rather than his own position in the squad.

Maestri, l’âme bleue by FFR

“I don’t know if I’ve got a new status, but one generation has gone and a new one is taking their place, that’s what happens,” said Maestri.

“We mustn’t get preoccupied with this. Guilhem will be the captain, there are a lot of us who know each other well.

Common goal

“We don’t need a hierarchy, nor a clan, just a common goal: to overcome our opponents and win.

“For me, and for my teammates, the key is a common goal. When you don’t cheat each other, when you want to share, you’re on the right path.”

Les Bleus kick off the tournament on February 6 against Italy at the Stade de France before welcoming Ireland to Paris the following week.
