Eddie Jones is backing Luther Burrell to be a success with England as a replacement for the injured Manu Tuilagi this summer after the Northampton centre passed his Twickenham audition with flying colours.

In the absence of Tuilagi – who injured his hamstring on duty for Leicester Tigers a week ago – and Saracen Owen Farrell, Burrell took his chance at No.12 in England’s 27-13 defeat of Wales on Sunday.

The Red Rose had to come from behind early on but Burrell, after evading the tackle of Wales fly-half Dan Biggar, got his side back on track with a well-executed try.

The 28-year-old was left out of England’s Rugby World Cup squad and neither was he involved in the team that won the Grand Slam at the 2016 RBS 6 Nations.

But Jones insists Burrell deserves his call-up for the three-Test tour of Australia – starting June 11 in Brisbane – after being left impressed by his commitment to the cause.

“It’s a great opportunity for Luther, who played really well. He carried the ball well, defended with aggression and scored an excellent try,” Jones said.

“We want players who are desperate to play for their country and are willing to make the sacrifices needed to succeed at the highest level.

“Luther’s worked hard at his game since January and we’ve seen a significant improvement in his fitness and conditioning as a result. He thoroughly deserves his place on the tour.

“It was a tough selection call. Ollie Devoto has really impressed during his recent time in the England camp. We wish him a successful tour to South Africa with the Saxons.”
