Welsh flanker Dan Lydiate still has no return date from injury but is continuing his recovery and will be using the next period of pre-season to ramp up his fitness.

Lydiate featured in all five of Wales’ RBS 6 Nations games earlier this year and was captain in their win over Italy and their 27-13 defeat to England at Twickenham.   But the 28-year-old Osprey has been out of action since limping off in the first half of Wales’ clash with England in May.   He suffered a double injury blow to his shoulder and hamstring which forced him off in the first half and ruled him out of the summer tour to New Zealand.

“Dan is recovering well from surgery to reconstruct the shoulder ligaments he damaged in the England game,” said Ospreys medical performance manager Chris Towers.   “In addition, he also injured his hamstring in the same match.   “He’s recovering well on both fronts but still has some work to do.

“We’ll be looking to up the ante through this next batch of pre-season with a view to being able to confirm a return-to-play date in the next few weeks.”   Lydiate is unlikely to feature in his club’s opening league game against Zebre on September 2 as he still requires further work before being back in contention.
