Converted prop Kevin Bryce admits he could not have asked for a better challenge than competing with Scotland tight-head WP Nel as he sets his sights on a national recall in the future.

Bryce, originally a flanker, decided to change position for the third time in his career from hooker following last year’s Rugby World Cup.

He subsequently swapped Glasgow Warriors for Edinburgh over the summer and finds himself behind Nel in the pecking order at BT Murrayfield, who is one of Scotland’s most important players.

But Bryce believes he can eventually add to his three Scotland caps by shining at club level in the absence of Nel.

“The end outcome for any player including myself is to get back in the Scotland set-up, but right now my main focus is Edinburgh,” said Bryce, who is yet to make his RBS 6 Nations bow.

“If I take the 15, 20, 30 minutes, or halves of rugby – whatever I get – then if WP is away with Scotland and I am the one who is fortunate enough to start behind him, I will take that and just keep building.

“It was baby steps to start with, just getting a feel for it, taking feedback from players and coaches.

“It has been a tough challenge but I am just starting to find my own feet. WP is WP but I am Kevin Bryce and I have to find a way that suits myself.”
