England’s injury problems deepened yesterday with confirmation Maro Itoje will miss the Autumn International series with a fractured hand.

The 21-year-old, who has become a key cog in Eddie Jones’ side since forcing his way in during the 2016 RBS 6 Nations, requires surgery and is expected to miss six weeks of action.

The Saracens star suffered the injury during a European victory against Scarlets on Saturday night, and immediate fears were realised after a scan.

Jones has a selection headache ahead of the first Autumn International against South Africa on November 12, particularly in the back row, with the likes of James Haskell, Sam Jones, Jack Clifford and Mike Williams all out.

Itoje was reportedly set to start against the Springboks at openside flanker, and his absence will be felt by both club and country, according to Saracens director of rugby Mark McCall.

“For any team to lose a player of the ability of Maro is a blow and he will be missed through the autumn for both Saracens and England,” said McCall.

“What’s now important for Maro is his recovery and we look forward to his return later this season.”
