Captain Sam Warburton heads a quartet of Wales stars who have signed extensions to their national dual contracts.

The Welsh Rugby Union announced that Warburton, fellow back-rower Dan Lydiate, powerhouse prop Samson Lee and flying winger Hallam Amos have all put pen to paper on the deals.

The quartet – who have made 62 RBS 6 Nations appearances between them – each represent a different Welsh region.

Warburton was the first Welshman to sign a national contract back in January 2014, which later became a national dual contract with his region the Cardiff Blues.

The deals are 60 per cent funded by the WRU with the other 40 per cent paid by the region, and WRU chief executive Martyn Phillips believes the announcement shows just how strong a position Welsh rugby is currently in.

“I am delighted that we are able to announce that four international stars have re-emphasised their commitment to the game here in Wales by re-signing national dual contracts,” said Phillips.

“Having our best players playing here in Wales is vital to the future health of our game. We have made no secret of that, and the importance both on and off the field at regional and national level in Welsh players playing their rugby in Wales.

“The close working relationship and ambition shared with the regions is crucial in our ability to retain players. Together, we believe we are creating an environment that players want to play in and will get the best out of them on the field.”
