Eddie Jones has selected rugby league convert and Sale Sharks winger Denny Solomona in his 31-man squad to tour Argentina this summer.

It’s only been five months since Solomona switched codes when he left Castleford Tigers for Aviva Premiership side Sale Sharks, but he’s taken no time at all in settling in and has clearly impressed Jones thus far.

His try-scoring form since making the move has led to the 23-year-old New Zealand-born winger becoming one of 15 uncapped players to be called up for  the two-match series against the Pumas by England head coach Eddie Jones.

It came just after he had become eligible to be picked by the Red Rose after completing a three-year residency, having represented Samoa in rugby league.

“The main thing is I need to come in and learn. Obviously I’m still new to the game as it has changed since I played in school,” said Solomona.

“There is Eddie Jones and the experienced players there like Mike Brown and everyone, I’m just going to keep learning.

“There’s no doubt I will give 100 per cent. There’s no doubt that I will go that extra mile for England.”

There’s certainly no doubt that Solomona has an eye for the try line, having scored 11 tries in his first 13 games for Sale, after notching an incredible 42 for Castleford in all competitions last year.

It’s led to comparisons with another successful league convert, Jason Robinson, who went on to win the Rugby World Cup and an RBS 6 Nations Grand Slam with England in 2003.

“I think my biggest buzz is contributing to a win,” Solomona said.

“I prefer wins than tries, they’re the most important to me. If I’m contributing to that then I’m doing my job.”

When asked how he found out about his call-up, he said: “I was with my partner at the time and they announced it on Twitter and it just went from there – I was quite excited actually.

“My mum texted me first and said congratulations and I didn’t know what she was talking about, so I checked my Twitter and found out.”
