Bristol and Wales lock Ian Evans has been forced to retire from professional rugby due to a persistent knee injury.

The 32-year-old made the decision to hang up his boots on medical advice, with his condition leaving him unable to train or play, thus ending a 15-year career in the sport.

Evans was capped 33 times by Wales after making his debut against Argentina in June 2006, during which he scored his only international try, and he was to prove to be a tower of strength in their second row.

None more so than during their Grand Slam years of 2008 and 2012 in the RBS 6 Nations, appearing in all five matches on both occasions for Warren Gatland’s side.

Evans was no stranger to Grand Slams, having already won one in the Under-21 Six Nations in 2005, while he started every game as the Welsh claimed another Championship in 2013 following a 30-3 victory over England in Round Five in Cardiff.

It was his form during that year that earned him a place on the 2013 British & Irish Lions’ tour of Australia before he earned what turned out to be his final cap against South Africa in Durban in June 2014.

“I am deeply saddened to end my professional career now. However, the knee injury I suffered while playing for Bristol prevents me from achieving full fitness and hinders my capability to perform,” said Evans.

“While I am sad that my playing career has come to an end, I’m looking forward to the next chapter and exploring new opportunities. I have been fortunate enough to have had an incredible career.

“I am honoured to have had the opportunity to represent my country, winning successive RBS Six Nations titles.

“I am grateful to the Ospreys and Bristol – two fantastic clubs where I have met great people and hold fond memories.”

Evans began his career with Pontypridd before signing for the Ospreys in 2005 and he would go on to win the PRO12 with the Swansea-based region on three occasions, as well as one Anglo-Welsh Cup.

After 129 appearances for the Ospreys, Evans moved to England to sign for Bristol, for whom he played 29 times, with his last appearance coming against Worcester Warriors last month.
