Six Nations fans could soon be seeing Bundee Aki in an Ireland Jersey, with the mercurial centre qualifying to represent the country in October.

The 27-year-old midfielder was selected by Joe Schmidt for an August training camp, and will be eligible for Ireland selection next month under the residency rule, having played for Connacht for three years.

The Auckland-born centre has made a huge impact on the Guinness Pro14, playing a key role in helping Connacht to the title in 2015-16, and many are tipping him to have the same impact on the international scene.

And despite enjoying his first Ireland training camp, the former Counties Manukau back admitted it was a big step up from club rugby.

“I think everyone knew that I went to the camp recently and I was very excited, very nervous at the same time,” said Aki.

“When I got there I was meeting different people, a different group of lads, I was very excited to see how they do things.

“It was an eye opener, it’s a big step up from Pro14 rugby and it was good, I enjoyed every minute of it.

“I enjoyed the challenges that were laid out. Obviously, you have to learn a lot of things, a lot of books.

“But look, I enjoyed it, I was very lucky to be in that first camp. There were a few of us [Connacht players] in there so it was good, I just enjoyed every bit.”

Schmidt is clearly an admirer, as is Robbie Henshaw, who played with Aki at Connacht before moving to Leinster, and there is a possibility the two could be reunited in the 2018 Six Nations Championship.

“He’s a world class player and he’d add value to the group,” said Henshaw. “I’m really looking forward to having him in.

“His voice on the pitch is really good – and his knowledge of the game, his vision.

“His off-loading game and being able to pull something out of nothing, that’s where he’s most dangerous.”
